I'm not sure if the problem is related to hardware - when i connect to the asa via hyper terminal i dont get any responses from the asa. the power LED is green but the vpn is amber. we have the reset button at the back of the unit - is the reset button useable or is it just there for future uses?

Hi,
Set up the computer or terminal as follows and give it a shot.
9600 baud (default)
8 data bits
no parity
1 stop bits
FC=hardware.
Please refer the below URL for details.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa70/quick/guide/70_ASAqk.html
I hope it helps.

done that Arul - looking at the asa front panel now, the only LED that is fully green is the VPN, nothing on the power LED and the status and active are amber. - strange.

sorted- i removed the flash card from the asa motherboard and put it back in - the asa is now booting properly.
