Don
The bandwidth of the interface specified using the interface bandwidth command is used for a couple of things: routing protocols of EIGRP and OSPF use the bandwidth in calculating their metric, calculation of link busy (reported in the show interface command and possibly in other network monitoring/management software) uses bandwidth, EIGRP will throttle its updates to use no more than 50% of bandwidth by default. So if you have a serial interface whose actual bandwidth is different from the default bandwidth value for the interface it is probably best to configure a more accurate value of the bandwidth.
