Hi,
Technically the only difference between GBIC and SFP is the size and shape of the module and nothing else.
As far as I understand, when GBIC (or Gig Bit Interface Convertor) was launched it was, it was to give a choice of the medium (Optic or Copper) to the customer hence the term "Interface Convertor" in the name GBIC.
However recently, due to new developments a more compact and yet effeficent form of GBIC was launched known as SFP or Small Form Pluggable Gigabit Interface Convertor which got more commonly known as SFP Modules.
For more information on both, please make a visit to

Hope that helps,

SFP's can be considered as next generation GBICs designed to consume less power and take up less space thus allowing greater densities and less consumption
Cisco SFP's use LC connectors, and GBICs use SC connectors
Cisco SFP's will in the future support DOM (digital optical monitoring and extended temperature range
GBICs do not support DOM except for the DWDM GBICS
