MPLS supports IPv4, ipv6 and label switching is used to route the packets instead of destination based forwarding.MPLS is layer 2.5 protocol. It is called so cos layer 2 and layer 3 headers are kept intact.
Benefits of MPLS are:-
BGP free core.
IP over ATM integration.
Traffice Engineering.
MPLS has become popular because of its support for wide range of application.
To configure MPLS you require following things:-
cef to be enabled
mpls enabled on required interface
Ldp or tdp enabled.

with regards to what to configure where, here it is:
1-P Router : Provider, does not need BGP but must have MPLS.
2-PE Router: Provider Edge, must have MPLS + BGP.
3-CE Router : Customer Edge, no MPLS. but u may choose to use IGPs and static to connect to PE. however, BGP is the most common way to connect PE and CE.
