SSL over VPN

Hi,

I've got to investigate some 'network slowness'. I don't have many details yet but it looks like there are some site to site VPNs running over the Internet between pix firewalls. The remote users access some SAP servers on a DMZ behind the pix at head office. I believe these SAP servers are running SSL.

Now I would have thought that it should either be one or the other, i.e. either no VPN and users accessing the DMZ servers with https or users coming in over a VPN but the servers not running SSL. I don't have a great deal of experience so I could be wrong. Is this normal or should it really be one or the other?

Also what would the general performance hit be with the 2 types of encryption?

Thanks

Pete.
