IOS upgrade cisco 2800

I'm trying to upgrade the IOS of a 2800 router.

I followed the steps described here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps259/products_tech_note09186a00801fc986.shtml#step1

but my problem is that when I ask to copy the new file, I can't erase the flash, so there is no enough space to copy the file.

Here is the output:

uem#copy tftp: flash:

Address or name of remote host []? 172.20.0.2

Source filename []? c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin

Destination filename [c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin]?

Accessing tftp://172.20.0.2/c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin...

Loading c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin from 172.20.0.2 (via FastEthernet0/0): !

%Error copying tftp://172.20.0.2/c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin (Not enough space on device)

The new file size is 40205052

Thanks in advance

How big is the flash card ? All you have to do is add up the 2 image sizes and see if it is bigger than the flash file if it is you "must" erase flash in order to fit it , no getting around physics ....

another thing other than the size of the flash. What are you using for your TFTP server? I had it before, I used pumpkin and apparently that had a limit of uploading files up to 32mb. Any IOS bigger than 32mb would give me "not enough space on device" I tried using tftpd32 and it work without a problem.

I already solved this problem. I didn't know that I could erase manually the current IOS from flash after copy the new one.

I erased the old IOS and then I copied the new one:

uem#delete flash:c2800nm-spservicesk9-mz.124-10a.bin

Delete filename [c2800nm-spservicesk9-mz.124-10a.bin]?

Delete flash:c2800nm-spservicesk9-mz.124-10a.bin? [confirm]

uem#copy tftp: flash:

Address or name of remote host [172.20.0.2]?

Source filename [c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin]?

Destination filename [c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin]?

Accessing tftp://172.20.0.2/c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin...

Loading c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17a.bin from 172.20.0.2 (via FastEthernet0/0): !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[OK - 40205052 bytes]

40205052 bytes copied in 185.264 secs (217015 bytes/sec)

Thanks

7 years later and this post saved my day, thank you so much, i though deleting the flash before installing the new one will delete everything (:
