Problem: Modem Connection Via ATA failing
Environment Details:
1) Using a Symbol SPT1800 Docked in a Symbol Cradle (Model # CRD1700-1000M-1)
2) ATA 186/188 running Firmware ATA030203SCCP051201A.zup.
3) Call Manager Version 4.1(3)sr4d
Cannot get a connection with Symbol SPT1800 Docked in the Cradle and attached to ATA186 or ATA188 to the device on the other end. Unit dials fine and tries to establish a handshake with the device on the other end but is never successful. Modem handshake tones sound funny/not normal.
All works fine and sounds normal with the same Symbol SPT1800 and Cradle when connected to POTS line from telephone company.

ATA's don't support Modem's and Super G3 faxes. Your best bet would be to install an FXS card into your voice gateway.

What config would be required for this to work on the GW ?

Hi,
Check this info:
Fax Services
The Cisco ATA supports two modes of fax services, in which fax signals are transmitted using the G.711
codec:
⢠Fax pass-through mode-Receiver-side Called Station Identification (CED) tone detection with
automatic G.711A-law or G.711μ-law switching.
⢠Fax mode-The Cisco ATA is configured as a G.711-only device.
From this great doc:
Cisco ATA 186 and Cisco ATA 188 Analog Telephone Adaptor Administrator's Guide for SCCP (version 3.0)
[Edit] What I forgot to mention is that it's basically the same if you are using a fax or a modem. Try setting it for Fax mode, i.e. G.711-only device so there will be no manipulation of the tones the modem (or fax) sends. Also set your modem for 9600 bps.
