EIGRP

How much presentage of the bandwidth does EIGRP uses for it self. And what exactly does that mean. For instance this bandwidth is reserved only for EIGRP's message and cannot be use for data or something else.

And also if we use redistibution with specific metrics and we also put the bandwidth over each interface , which of both will EIGRP will use for metric. The interface bandwidth or the metric for redistribution.

Thanks

moses.

By default EIGRP will not use more than 50% of the interface bandwidth. This is the configured bandwidth over that interface.

In a stable network you would not see anything except EIGRP hellos and hence will not utilize much bandwidth and will be available for other traffic.

EIGRP requires that you mention the metrics during redistribution and hence the mentioned value is taken. However when you redistribute static routes it is not mandatory to define metrics. If not defined, it takes the interface metrics

How much percentage of bandwidth will be used by EIGRP depends on how much EIGRP has to advertise. In almost all situations the real answer is that EIGRP uses a small amount of bandwidth. And in no case is bandwidth reserved for use only by EIGRP. The bandwidth is always available for use by other traffic.

I believe that your question reflects a misunderstanding of one of the features of EIGRP. EIGRP will restrict its update traffic so that it does not use more than x% of traffic on a link. It is not that x% of the link bandwidth is reserved for EIGRP but that EIGRP will not use more than x% of the available bandwidth. Perhaps an example may help: consider a situation where a branch office has a very small bandwidth link (perhaps 56K link). And assume that this branch office is part of a large network in which there are very many networks and subnets to advertise. So when the link to the branch office comes to the up state then EIGRP will have many updates to send. This could potentially use most of the available bandwidth of the link. So EIGRP slows down the rate at which it sends updates (by default to 50% of the link bandwidth - and this is configurable). This leaves bandwidth available for other kinds of traffic.
