I have Cisco Router 2821. It is not configure yet.My PC is connected to the console on a router. When I turn the router on the message "rommon 1>" shows up in Hyper Terminal session. How to load IOS and start to configure the router.

Thank you,

Vlad.

I have this problem too.

Even if the router is not configured yet it is not normal for it to boot into rommon. It might be helpful to figure why it is doing this. Some reasons that it might do this include:

- a setting of the config register instructs the router to boot into rommon

- the image file in flash is corrupt

- there is no image file in flash

Could you boot the router, capture and post the console output while it is booting? This would give us some insight into why it is booting into rommon.

Here's a link with step-by-step instructions.

http://cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps259/products_tech_note09186a00801fc986.shtml

This should help when configuring in rommon too.

rommon 1 >IP_ADDRESS=10.1.2.55

rommon 2 >IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0

rommon 3 >DEFAULT_GATEWAY=10.1.2.254

rommon 4 >TFTP_SERVER=10.1.2.7

rommon 5 >TFTP_FILE=c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-15.T1.bin

rommon 6 >tftpdnld

All of the above are required!

HTH and please rate.

Vlad

Thanks for the additional information. It is quite helpful and clearly shows the reason that the router is booting into rommon. There is a problem with the flash and the router can not find any image file to boot. Does this router have its flash on a compact flash? If so can you verify that there is a card in the compact flash slot? If there is a card can you remove it, replace it (reseat it), and try the boot again?

The information provided by Collin about how to do tftpdnld is very good and may be needed after we resolve the issue about the problem in flash. But it will not work until the issue about flash is resolved.

Rick and Collin,

I ran tftpdnld and here is the output. Should I proceed and press "Y"?

Collin Clark Wed, 12/05/2007 - 08:22

Is this the actual input? If so you'll need to enter your values such as your TFTP Server, the correct IOS image, etc.

vsurinovich@tas... Wed, 12/05/2007 - 08:27

This is output. The console is waiting for repond y or n.

Richard Burts Wed, 12/05/2007 - 08:26

Vlad

NO - do not press Y yet. There are several problems that must be resolved before you do this.

First problem: have you resolved the problem with flash on the router? tftpdnld will try to copy the image to flash and if there is still a problem with flash (as there was in the prior attempt to boot) then tftpdnld will fail.

Second problem: the values in the instructions that Collin provided were example values (IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, tftp server, tftp file) and you need to put in values that are correct for your environment.

when you get both of these resolved then you can try tftpdnld.

Rick,

how to restore the image on Flash Card?

I reseated FC a few times, but getting the same output with errors.

Thak you.

Richard Burts Wed, 12/05/2007 - 08:59

Vlad

It is good to know that you have reseated the card. I had hoped that this might fix the problem (I have seen several routers where the flash card had become not well seated and the router would not boot with similar symptoms and the problem was fixed when the card was reseated).

Now that the card has been seated are you still getting exactly the same messages when your attempt to boot:

device does not contain a valid FS

boot: cannot open "flash:"

boot: cannot determine first executable file name on device "flash:"

With the card reseated it would be ok to try tftpdnld and see what happens. Do be sure to change the values specified for tftpdnld to what is right for your network and router.

I am a bit concerned that there is still some problem with the flash card and that the tftpdnld may fail again. But we will not know until you try it.

Is this a cisco flashcard or did someone try to use a generic flash in it ?

vsurinovich@tas... Wed, 12/05/2007 - 09:23

This is an original cisco flash card.

Richard Burts Wed, 12/05/2007 - 09:34

Vlad

Is this flash card original to the 2821? Or was it perhaps transferred to the 2821 from some other Cisco router? Is transferred, then from what platform did it originate?

Rick

vsurinovich@tas... Wed, 12/05/2007 - 12:51

Rick,

yes, CF card is original to the 2821.

vsurinovich@tas... Wed, 12/05/2007 - 12:58

Rick,

should I download c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-15.T1.bin to TFTP server? If so, where can I get it?

Thanks, Vlad.

Richard Burts Wed, 12/05/2007 - 13:36

Vlad

NO do not download c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-15.T1.bin to the TFTP server. That image is for the 870 series of routers. You need an image for 2800 series of router.

In your original post you say that the 2821 is not configured yet. Perhaps it would help us if you would tell us a bit about this router. Have you had it for a while or is it recently acquired? If it is recently acquired from where did you acquire it?

You get images for download from the Cisco web site (which will require a CCO ID with authorized privileges to download software). You would be able to identify the particular version that would fit your router on the Cisco web site.

Richard Burts Wed, 12/05/2007 - 19:44

Vlad

There are several things that appear to be inconsistent in the way that you set up tftpdnld and perhaps these caused the problem when you attempted to run the utility.

You set the address to use on the router as 216.214.47.30 with a mask of 255.255.255.0. Normally I would expect the default gateway to be an address in the same subnet, but you configured the gateway as 216.214.128.134. Note in the error messages that the router is attempting to ARP for the default gateway address but gets no response. The failure to receive an ARP response is what causes the TFTP to abort. I suggest that you try it again and this time put a gateway address that is a layer 3 routing device that is in the same subnet.

The default gateway would not matter if the TFTP server was in the same subnet as the router doing tftpdnld. But you configured the TFTP server as 10.10.10.5. So to get to this address the router does need its default gateway.

I would suggest that you try the tftpdnld again. This time think through the various devices that are involved (router, tftp server, and possibly default gateway) and the addresses used on each of these devices.

Give it a try and let us know if it works.

Rick,

I changed an address on TFTP server. It is 216.214.47.112 now.

The router's ip I'm assuming will be 216.214.47.30

216.214.47.1 is the ip address of the router where 2821 connects to.

Also TFTP server is the same PC that I'm connecting to the router's console.

Here is input and output of HyperTerminal:

rommon 1 > IP_ADDRESS=216.214.47.30

rommon 2 > IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0

rommon 3 > DEFAULT_GATEWAY=216.214.128.1

rommon 4 > TFTP_SERVER=216.214.47.112

rommon 5 > TFTP_FILE=c2800nm-spservicesk9-mz.124-17a.bin

rommon 6 > tftpdnld

Rick,

is there anything else you think of?

ccbootcamp Wed, 12/05/2007 - 20:32

Vlad,

Get a USB CF card reader. Copy the file from your PC over onto the CF card using your PC. It's a very easy way to do it. I've loaded hundreds of CF cards for 2800 series routers this way. It will make your life VERY easy.

Brad,

thank you for an idea. I have just one router with a CF card, but if I could not loaded IOS

I'll probably buy a reader.

Vlad.

Go buy yourself a CF reader, it will do you good in the long run. It's a $15 investment well worth it. Please rate my posts, I appreciate it. :)

If you have another 2821, try formating the troublesome flash card.
