I have Cisco Router 2821. It is not configure yet.My PC is connected to the console on a router. When I turn the router on the message "rommon 1>" shows up in Hyper Terminal session. How to load IOS and start to configure the router.
Thank you,
Vlad.

Even if the router is not configured yet it is not normal for it to boot into rommon. It might be helpful to figure why it is doing this. Some reasons that it might do this include:
- a setting of the config register instructs the router to boot into rommon
- the image file in flash is corrupt
- there is no image file in flash
Could you boot the router, capture and post the console output while it is booting? This would give us some insight into why it is booting into rommon.

Rick,
thank you for quick response. Here is the the console ouput:

Here's a link with step-by-step instructions.
http://cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps259/products_tech_note09186a00801fc986.shtml
This should help when configuring in rommon too.
rommon 1 >IP_ADDRESS=10.1.2.55
rommon 2 >IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon 3 >DEFAULT_GATEWAY=10.1.2.254
rommon 4 >TFTP_SERVER=10.1.2.7
rommon 5 >TFTP_FILE=c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-15.T1.bin
rommon 6 >tftpdnld
All of the above are required!
HTH and please rate.

Thanks for the additional information. It is quite helpful and clearly shows the reason that the router is booting into rommon. There is a problem with the flash and the router can not find any image file to boot. Does this router have its flash on a compact flash? If so can you verify that there is a card in the compact flash slot? If there is a card can you remove it, replace it (reseat it), and try the boot again?
The information provided by Collin about how to do tftpdnld is very good and may be needed after we resolve the issue about the problem in flash. But it will not work until the issue about flash is resolved.

Rick and Collin,
I ran tftpdnld and here is the output. Should I proceed and press "Y"?
IP_ADDRESS: 10.1.2.55
IP_SUBNET_MASK: 255.255.255.0
DEFAULT_GATEWAY: 10.1.2.254
TFTP_SERVER: 10.1.2.7
TFTP_FILE: C870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-15.T1.bin
TFTP_VERBOSE: Progress
TFTP_RETRY_COUNT: 18
TFTP_TIMEOUT: 7200
TFTP_CHECKSUM: Yes
TFTP_MACADDR: 00:15:63:8f:4a:c0
GE_PORT: Gigabit Ethernet 0
GE_SPEED_MODE: Auto
Invoke this command for disaster recovery only.
WARNING: all existing data in all partitions on flash will be lost!
Do you wish to continue? y/n: [n]:

Is this the actual input? If so you'll need to enter your values such as your TFTP Server, the correct IOS image, etc.

This is output. The console is waiting for repond y or n.

NO - do not press Y yet. There are several problems that must be resolved before you do this.
First problem: have you resolved the problem with flash on the router? tftpdnld will try to copy the image to flash and if there is still a problem with flash (as there was in the prior attempt to boot) then tftpdnld will fail.
Second problem: the values in the instructions that Collin provided were example values (IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, tftp server, tftp file) and you need to put in values that are correct for your environment.
when you get both of these resolved then you can try tftpdnld.

Rick,
how to restore the image on Flash Card?
I reseated FC a few times, but getting the same output with errors.
Thak you.

Vlad
It is good to know that you have reseated the card. I had hoped that this might fix the problem (I have seen several routers where the flash card had become not well seated and the router would not boot with similar symptoms and the problem was fixed when the card was reseated).
Now that the card has been seated are you still getting exactly the same messages when your attempt to boot:
device does not contain a valid FS
boot: cannot open "flash:"
boot: cannot determine first executable file name on device "flash:"
With the card reseated it would be ok to try tftpdnld and see what happens. Do be sure to change the values specified for tftpdnld to what is right for your network and router.
I am a bit concerned that there is still some problem with the flash card and that the tftpdnld may fail again. But we will not know until you try it.

Is this a cisco flashcard or did someone try to use a generic flash in it ?
12-05-2007 09:23 AM
This is an original cisco flash card.
12-05-2007 09:34 AM
Vlad
Is this flash card original to the 2821? Or was it perhaps transferred to the 2821 from some other Cisco router? Is transferred, then from what platform did it originate?

Rick,
yes, CF card is original to the 2821.
