Hello.

I have 2 switches, a 2950 & a 2900XL.

Here is the config for port 24 on both:

Switchport: Enabled

Administrative mode: static access

Operational Mode: static access

Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: isl

Operational Trunking Encapsulation: isl

Negotiation of Trunking: Disabled

Access Mode VLAN: 1 (default)

Trunking Native Mode VLAN: 1 (default)

Trunking VLANs Enabled: NONE

Pruning VLANs Enabled: NONE

SW2950#show int fa0/24 sw

Name: Fa0/24

Switchport: Enabled

Administrative Mode: dynamic desirable

Operational Mode: static access

Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q

I have 5 cisco 2611 routers. all the E0/0 ports on the routers are plugged into the 2950, and the E0/1 into the 2900XL. i have a serial connection between two of the routers. i want to run a few practice labs and pass traffic between the switches through port 24 on both switches. how can i set this up, in light of the above config?

thanks!

Show us your VTP config from both switches and the running config for both ports.

nevermind, looks like your doing ISL trunking on one switch and 802.1q trunking on the other switch. fix it - do isl on the 2950! (the XL switch doesnt support dot1q if memory serves) :)

ok. i've changed the encapsulation type to dot1q on both switches and the error messages have gone away. i did a show cdp neighbor, and the second switch and all 5 routers appear on both switches. perhaps now, i can begin setting up routing protocols for communication between the routers. i plan to do rip, eigrp and ospf. here is another question: will i have to create vlans for each E0/0 & E0/1 port on each router that are plug into the two switches respectively?

here is the new config:

SW2900XL#sho int fa0/24 sw

Name: Fa0/24

Switchport: Enabled

Administrative mode: trunk

Operational Mode: trunk

Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q

Operational Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q

Negotiation of Trunking: Disabled

Access Mode VLAN: 0 ((Inactive))

Trunking Native Mode VLAN: 1 (default)

Trunking VLANs Enabled: ALL

Trunking VLANs Active: 1,10,20

Pruning VLANs Enabled: NONE

SW2900XL#

SW2950#show int fa0/24 sw

Name: Fa0/24

Switchport: Enabled

Operational Mode: static access

Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q

Operational Trunking Encapsulation: native

Negotiation of Trunking: On

Access Mode VLAN: 1 (default)

Trunking Native Mode VLAN: 1 (default)

Voice VLAN: none

Administrative private-vlan host-association: none

Administrative private-vlan mapping: none

Administrative private-vlan trunk native VLAN: none

Administrative private-vlan trunk encapsulation: dot1q

Administrative private-vlan trunk normal VLANs: none

Administrative private-vlan trunk private VLANs: none

Operational private-vlan: none

all of the routers have no configuration on them, as i just upgraded the IOS to 12.3(23) (fc5)

I want to build a lab. do i need to create vlans to have separate networks that i can use in a lab environment? also, i want to play around with loopbacks interfaces too.

thanks!
