Data Transfer Rate Test between two end points (computers)

Hello,

Is there any specific test procedure or document to test data transfer speed in the form of file transfer or tcp/udp streaming between two end points connected one computer on FastEther Port on Catalyst 3750 to the distribution Cisco 4000series connecting to access switch Cat 3750 at the other end point.

Anybody would like to share experiences will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Best Regards,

Ahmed

Hi,

Monitor all the switch port in the path from A-End to B-End using MRTG perhaps. Also, install NetMeter in Host-A and Host-B to see the Download/Upload speed.

Beside network, areas that affect the throughput is the aplication and system performance (IO, CPU, MEM). You may have a GE between Host-A and Host-B, but if the application or system is not capable of sending or receiving data that will utilize that bandwidth, it's useless.

There is in IPM (internet performance monitor) a way to program regular tests between two IOS devices.

Dependant on the IOS you can ICMP or UDP ping or go as far as mimic a voice call between specific devices and get data like jitter, delay and even MOS.

IPM is a part of LMS but it can be installed stand alone elsewhere.

Cheers,

Michel
