I put in a new 2960 it went out after 12 hours, I put in another new 2960, it went out after 12 hours, I power cycled it, then about 12 hours later it went out again.
What could be causing this?

When you say it "went out" what exactly do you mean? Did the switch reboot? Is the power gone? Does it respond to pings? Are all of the lights off on the box? Can you be more specific? What other devices is it connected to?

It would not ping and no servers behind it would ping.

Connect a console to the switch, can you access the switch through console? check the device uptime in 'show version' and reboot cause. Check the logs using 'show logging'.

Nothing now, I pull it off the rack because it keeps going down, I had a crossover coming from another switch, and a numbers of servers were connected to it.
I replaced that switch with a 2950 and its working ok, but I need the gigabit port for the crossover that comes from the other switch is isnt available on the 2950.

Does this sound like a faulty power supply?
12-10-2007 08:23 AM
If you said this was happening with one switch, I would say, "could be." But you said this is happening with another new 2960 as well!?!?!?
Do you have a 2950 or 2960? You've mentioned both types of switches.
Please answer my questions I am asking you. It will help to provide an accurate answer.

It was 2 2960's, i have a 2950 on the rack now and that one does not fail.
Are the 2960's more prone to overheating or anything?
12-10-2007 08:52 AM
Do you have a UPS that the 2960 was plugged into. I have seen issues with autoranging power supplies and inexpensive stepped wave power supplies in other applications. If it is happening at regular intervals, could it be happening with the UPS self test?
It is possible that the 2950's power supply is not as sensitive as the 2960's, and that might explain why you see the problem with muliple 2960's, but not the 2950.
From your show version, it would appear that the switch is returning due to a power fault, and from your descriptions I would suspect something in your power configuration that may be the culprit. If you are not running a UPS, I'd recommend investigating the power in that rack.

I'm not running a UPS in that rack, I will try the switch in a different rack with a different power circuit.
Thanks!

Question, the datacenter has a UPS, do you recommend a small UPS in the rack for the switch?
