311 input errors, 2 CRC

Hello

i have 3550 switch gig0/1 connected to DS port gig 1/38..on the gig 1/38 i notice this output:

98747717 packets input, 12312433737 bytes, 0 no buffer

Received 98291772 broadcasts (98135036 multicast)

0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

311 input errors, 2 CRC, 2 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

0 watchdog, 0 multicast, 0 pause input

0 input packets with dribble condition detected

1926088773 packets output, 243118581892 bytes, 0 underruns

0 output errors, 0 collisions, 4 interface resets

0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred

0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 PAUSE output

Are you using STP? If so, those will be the multicast frames. As to the few input and CRC errors, they're really nothing to worry about.

When was the last time the interface counters were cleared?

Ater clearing the counters check whether the errors are incrementing. If they are, then check for cabling, speed/duplex issues.

Like previously stated, clear the counters, get an idea of how often you are getting the errors.

The above link tells you what causes input errors, most of the time when I see them they are cabling issues.

If it is fiber, you can check the DB loss, cat5 or cat6 you can either buy a device to check the quality and certify the cable or you can just ensure proper termination. Either way it doesn't look like a big issue, 311 errors with the amount of packets doesn't seem to be a big issue, it could have even been when the connection was established or initially plugged in.
