does ipsec use tunnelling standard? or is it purely encryption and does not need a tunnel ?

can someone help me here? I have just set up an ipsec tunnel between 2 sites using my asa's, its this using L2TP with ipsec, or is the tunnel pure ip sec, no l2pt involved ?
