IOS versions for CCNA/(future CCNP) home lab

Unanswered Question

Hi, my old CCNA expired and I need to take the new 802 exam to recertify. I'd like to setup a home lab but after some digging on kits, I may not have the money to go for the latest IOS. I'm trying to spend about $500. I have noticed a kit from ciscokit.com with 2501 and 2502 routers and 2924 switch. Router runs IOS 12.3.24, switch runs 12.0.05. I understand the latest IOS is 12.4. So, my question is, is this home lab kit sufficient for studying? Will the IOS be too old that I'll be missing a lot?

I'm planning to pursue CCNP/CCDP after CCNA. Will these equipments be any good ? (I know I will be definitely buying some more newer routers down the road, but would any of these be good for some labs?)

Thanks. - AC

I have this problem too.

12.4 is not supported on the 25oo series routers. Also, you would need at least one router with a 100Meg Ethernet port for Trunking; again, the 2500s do not support 100Meg Ethernet. The 2924 would be fine for CCNA, but you will need at least one "layer-3" switch for CCNP.

Good luck!

Thanks. Can the 2950 series switches do layer-3 switching? - AC

Hi Alex

Nope, The 2950 is purely a L2 switch. As is mentioned above if you want to get a L3 switch you would need either a 3350, 3560 or 3750 etc.

Not that the 3350 is cheap (even on Ebay) but it will be the cheapest of the 3 models listed.

Also another option when you need to use L3 switching (CCNP) is to simply rent rack time. This will be a little easier on the budget.

Best Regards,

Michael
