I have a private line connected to a 2800 and I have a backup VPN connection setup with a pix501. The default gateway for all the PCs is the 2800. What is the best automatic way I can send the traffic through the pix501 VPN tunnel if the private line connection goes down?

What is your network topology? are the pix and the 2800 connected on the same subnet?
One way is to have a higher metric route ofor the destinations on the 2800 pointing to the PIX. This way when the private line is down, the packets would be sent to the PIX which can initiate the VPN connection.
Something simialr would be required on the other end to point the connection back to VPN
This would however does not address the failure of the 2800 itself.

Yes, they are both on the same subnet.
