Eigrp only supports MD5 authentications

advantage is MD5 is more secure as it encrypted by hash algorithm.I see no disadvantage in configuring a authentication as it wont harm the operation ,but provide more sort of security.. ;)

also its a must that authentication string on both end must match, otherwise neighbor ship will be broken...

lets hear more abt it frm experts

Hi Nasheer,

MD5 cryptographic checksums are the only authentication supported in EIGRP.The clear-text authentication is supported in RIP V2 and ospf they also support MD5.However clear-text authentication should be used only when neighbouring device does not support more secure MD5.Because EIGRP will be spoken only between cisco devices, this situation will never arise.

hope this helps.
