Cisco 7204 interface error problem

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about a problem we have with one of our routers at the moment.

What happens is that on one FastEthernet interface, we are intermittantly getting tons of interface errors, but it doesn't have any reason or error type listed.

I noticed there are a lot of interface flushes, but there seems to be enough buffer space allocated (as far as I can tell, as I am quite new at this side of things).

Here is the results of a "show interface FastEthernet 0/1":

FastEthernet0/1 is up, line protocol is up

Hardware is i82543 (Livengood), address is ****.****.**** (bia ****.****.****)

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit, DLY 100 usec,

reliability 255/255, txload 26/255, rxload 7/255

Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

Keepalive set (10 sec)

Full-duplex, 100Mb/s, 100BaseTX/FX

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input 00:00:00, output 00:00:00, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters 3d22h

Input queue: 0/75/3379/120488 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0

Queueing strategy: fifo

Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)

5 minute input rate 2820000 bits/sec, 1671 packets/sec

5 minute output rate 10250000 bits/sec, 1774 packets/sec

557753535 packets input, 1860267874 bytes

Received 4150138 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 1432 throttles

596859 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 90 overrun, 596769 ignored

0 watchdog

0 input packets with dribble condition detected

568569887 packets output, 3980434105 bytes, 0 underruns

0 output errors, 0 collisions, 0 interface resets

0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred

0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier

0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

Like I said, there are no physical errors, so I guess I can rule out issues between the router and the switch port it is connected to.

A previous tech has already tried installing an ethernet port in one of the expansion slots, but this didn't make any difference.

Any ideas/input appreciated,

Cheers,

Matt.

Hi,

What is the speed and duplex mode of the switch port to which is connected the FastEthernet 0/1 of the router?

It seems a classical problem of duplex mismatch.

Verify that the switch port is 100 Mb Full duplex.

I hope this helps,

Best regards.

Massimiliano.

Hi Massimiliano,

Yes, the switch port is 100Mb / Full Duplex.

I am going to try a different switch port just in case the one it is on is faulty, and I will report back on how it goes.

Thanks,

Matthew.
