6513 IOS upgrade issue - flash format incompatibilities?

I have a 6513 Sup2 MFSC2. I am upgrading from 12.1(26) to 12.2(18). The flash is 64M ram is 256M. Flash is ATA.

Image requires 64M, so it must go into the flash card. You must format the card using the current version of 12.1(26) and then copy ftp: disk0: with the 12.2(18) image.

You clear the "boot system" variable and put in the pointer to the new image in flash.


The image couldn't be booted. I then booted from an old 12.1(19) in the bootflash. At this point the flash couldn't be read with a "dir" command. ROMMON itself couldn't read it either.

I formated the flash using another 6513 running 12.2(18) image and then both the rommon and 12.1(19) could read the flash (I just couldn't boot the image at that point.

It got late last night and I just recovered the old IOS version and got the switch back up.

Has anyone seen this problem?

Yeah, generally the Sup 2 can't read ATA disks from the ROMMON. You're actually quite out of luck with that.

You do have options, you can find a version of software that you like that fits in the sup-bootflash:, or you can find a linear flash disk for your supervisors to boot off of.

You won't have an easy time coming by linear flash PCMCIA cards these days, however, its really your best choice.

Thanks very much. I have been using the ATA flash but booting an earlier version of IOS, 12.1(23). Now I am having problems with 12.2(18).

I will be purchasing the Linear flash before the next attempt. I think there is an issue between flash formats and or flash cards and or IOS versions and or ROMMON interactions between these things. Will post back when the issue is resolved. This one threw me in the wee hours.

You were able to boot off the ATA flash using the prior version?

What version of the ROMMON does the box have on it presently?

Can I see the output of show redudancy please, as well as the output of show module?

Do you have exactly the same software image in a card in the same slot of the secondary supervisor?

I'd love to see a log of what happens when you try to boot the switch from the flash card during the instance that you can actually read it but not get it to boot, after you formatted in a 12.2(18)SX system, I think it was.



Good thinking. I too had some questions there; questions involve trying to boot another 6513's flash running 12.2(18) but not using redundant sups. It didn't boot... thought it might have something to do with redundancy configs in my router's configs. Will try a boot without invoking the configs. config-register 0x2142, confreg 0x2142

I formatted the flash with the 12.2(18) running on another 6513. It too has 64MB ATA flash, but no redundant sup2. I think that I had to format the flash using the 12.2(18) IOS, to get it to work with my ROMMON version.

I will be trying an upgrade tomorrow night and will capture some things. I am very appreciative of your help.
