WS-4948-S

The WS-4948 has 48 switch ports(labeled 1-48), 1 console and 1 management port then the 4 ports for uplinks(labeled45-48). When config'ing I used the last 2 ports as my uplinks. As They show up on the config as Gig1/47 & 48, does this inhibit me from using the last 2 switchports, also labeled 47 & 48, for connectivity? I am able to use gig1/45 & 46 by implementing the media-type command but it seems a waste of ports capacity if I eliminated the ports 47 & 48 by using the last 2 ports for uplinks??? It seems to me the last 4 switchports and the last 4 physical ports are associated therefore limiting the use?

Hi Friend,

The Cisco Catalyst 4948 offers 48 ports of wire-speed 10/100/1000BASE-T with 4 alternative wired ports that can accommodate optional 1000BASE-X Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics.

The Cisco Catalyst 4948 has 52 physical switching ports (48 10/100/1000 and 4 SFP) on the front panel. Up to 48 of these ports can be active at one time in any combination.

Ankur, That was what I was thinking but could not rationalize the waste of 4 ports. I researched and could not find that fact in writing so was unsure. Thanx very much for your response.
