Hi can you please help me.
Im planning to connect 2 servers with 1 gig nic on 3550 switch fiber module.
Is there any probelm?
what do i need to check to make sure that i will not encounter any problem?
r all gbics ports hav the same capabilities?
please see below my router show version

Thanks for the help.

All Gigabit switchports have the same capability. Can you post the entire show version ?

hi edison,
what can you say about 2 server's connecting on gigabit switch ports?
Is that a bad or good setup? im worried about the problems that I will be encounter in the future.
Thanks.

If you aren't planning on connecting other switches (expanding your port count), then using the Gigabit ports should be fine.
Often, those ports are left for inter-switch link because that's where the bandwidth aggregation usually occurs.

Hi edison,
Again thanks for your help and i'm very appreaciated.
I have also plan to connect 3 switches on 3550 via ethernet ports. 2 2950 switches and 1 2960.And will also use VTP and VLAN for 2960 for 10 pc's connected.( my boss wanted me to separate the traffic from 10 pc's connected on 2960)
Is that OK?
BTW the 2 serves that will connect on 3550 has 1 gig NIC.
Thanks and God bless

1) You mentioned the 3550 has fiber Gigabit ports. Are you planning to swap those fiber GBICs for copper GBICs for the server connection? You need the module(s) 1000BASE-T GBIC
2) Creating multiple Vlans on these switches and managing these Vlans via VTP is perfectly Ok. You will need to route between these Vlans using the 3550. Make sure you have the EMI image for routing support and enable ip routing on the switch.
Make sure you read these documents:
Configuring Vlans:
Configuring VTP:
Configuring Routing:
You don't need a dynamic routing protocol on the 3550 to route between Vlans. Default ip routing will take care of routing between its connected Vlans.
