Hi all, its it possible to say have 3 or 4 routers in my network, 1 being the primary and the other 3 backup, would I just assign different priorities on them all ?

I have this problem too.

Yes its possible and you are right by giving them different pririties you can manipulate the primary and back up routers.You can use preemt option for the failover and redundancy purpose.

what does the preempt option do ? does it make sure that the same primary router takes charge when it comes back on ? please explain

yes, again you are right - by enabling preempt, the router with higher priority becomes master, after it comes up again. in vrrp preempt is enabled by default, on hsrp you must enable it.
