ICMP Time Exceeded message

hi all,

can someone help me understand how this works?

when a host need to ping another host and the destination is some routers away;is the routers between the path that generate this kind of messages?

how this process works?

The last router in the path with reachability to the destination will try to reach the destination until the TTL (Time To Live) reaches zero.

Once it does, it sends an ICMP Time Exceeded message back to the source.

You can determine which router is the last one with reachability from the source towards the destination by performing a traceroute.
