-->Cisco Newbie<--
I wanted to make it clear that I am a newbie with Cisco. I am currently working with my first piece of equipment that is Cisco named....And for some reason, I think picked a hard one!!!
I have a CSS 11501 Software version 8.10. Is the CiscoView Device Manager the web interface application?? If so does this come installed? If its not installed, can I install it?? I guess I should have started by asking...Does this switch have a GUI interface? I also tried downloading some software on the cisco site and cant seem to do it. it has a picture what looks to be a lock next to it? If anyone has the patience to help me I would be very thankful.
thanks in advance.

Hi,
Yes CVDM is the GUI for CSS software 8.10 and 8.20.
It is not installed from factory, you can run the command show version to see if is actually installed on your device:
CSS11501B# show version
Version: sg0820201 (08.20.2.01)
Flash (Locked): 08.10.1.06
Flash (Operational): 08.20.2.01
Type: PRIMARY
Licensed Cmd Set(s): Standard Feature Set
Enhanced Feature Set
Secure Management
CVDM Version: cvdm-css-1.0_K9
If it is not installed you can download from here:
http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/css11500-crypto
Here is the installation guide:
Hope it helps!!

So I am trying to get this CVDM installed and this is what I get after I try to configure a FTP record and install
N O T E: image must be in zipped format.
Please Enter Version to Install:cvdm-css-1.0.zip
Upgrade to Version cvdm-css-1 [y/n/q]? y
Attempting ftp of cvdm-css-1.0.zip:
CSS11501# copy ftp DEFAULT_FTP ${new_gui_version_file} gui-image
Connecting (-)
%% Couldn't connect to server
Error in script playback line:413
>>> copy ftp DEFAULT_FTP ${new_gui_version_file} gui-image
CSS11501#
Script Playback cancelled.
I have configured a FTP record with my company FTP. Included username and password. Put the zip file in a folder called Cisco....so my base directory would be /Cisco....right??

Well I guess the better question is....how am i accessing this FTP??? I currently have the switch hooked up through my com port...I would have to be able to get out the net to be able to access a FTP...its hosted offsite. This instructions read like doctor manuals. Can anyone like step this process out for me...I have configured a IP address for my internal Network...I have configured the gateway, subnet, and DNS for internal network.....so now how do get the file for CVDM from the FTP? Something to do with the ethernet management port?
