HWIC-4ESW Question

Hi all,

If you use a HWIC-4ESW in a router that supports it, can those 4 ports be individually configured as Fast Ethernet 2/3/4, etc? (I'm a firewall guy, so bear with me :-) ) I'm getting confused by the "switch" aspect...

Basically, I just need more routable fast ethernet ports on the 3845. Is this the best solution?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike refer to this link..

The Cisco EtherSwitch network module and service module interfaces can be configured directly as Layer 3, or routed, ports by using the no switchport command and assigning an IP address directly to the port. Cisco Switchports on the HWIC do not support Layer 3 addresses natively; they must be assigned to a SVI and use a VLAN interface for Layer 3. Every switch port can be assigned to a unique VLAN, up to 15 VLANs maximum.

Thank you Jorge. That is exactly the info I was looking for (but not having much luck...)

Mike

You could use dot1q from a physical port on router and trunk to a switch thus giving you more logical interfaces, or do you realy need the dedicated L3 physical port.

We have a bunch of DSL lines that I was hoping to add for outgoing (and returning) web traffic load balancing.

I know there are DSL WICs, but I don't want to spend that much. So I was just going to put the DSL routers in Bridge mode and use those as the "Edge" devices to route out to.

What do you suggest, given those parameters?

Thanks
