Hi all, is there ever a case using hsrp when you would plug the routers in back to back using a crossover ?

No, while it would work... there would be no point. HSRP is designed to provide a redundant gateway. since there will be no hosts on this segment needing a gateway there is no point in doing this. For more information check out the link below.

there is a clearly advantage of doing this
way, if both upstream routers are connected
to different providers and running either OSPF
or EIGRP. That way, with the crossover
connection between two routers, you can
load-balance between the two circuit thus
maximizing the your bandwidth.
That is how I implement this at my work place.

Cisco24x7,
You are talking about load balancing and not running HSRP on this segment. Those are two different things.
The original question was
"is there ever a case using hsrp when you would plug the routers in back to back using a crossover?"
Not "is there any case in which you would run a crossover cable to connect two routers together?"
Those are two different questions.
