Hi Bharathidasan,

This is one of the nice documents discussing this issue in brief:

http://www.cisco.com/web/about/ac123/ac147/archived_issues/ipj_1-2/switch_evolution.html

[edit] To brief you, a layer 3 switch simply replaces some of the router's software logic with hardware (ASICs) enhancing its performance, although this is not the issue anymore since modern routers had utilized this concept (ex: Cisco 7600 using the same hardware architecture as the Catalyst 6500), its all now about Cisco's implementations, for example the Cisco 7600 Series delivers software releases that contains support for rich service-enabling features such as virtual private LAN service (VPLS), Any Transport over MPLS (AToM), hardware-accelerated Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), and IPv6.

BR,

Mohammed Mahmoud.
