Though I change the boot variable on an ASA 5520 I can't get a new image to load until I delete any older image in flash. Is there a way to get the boot variable to stick?

I upgraded an ASA5520 to a new image and did not have problems getting it to load the new image (copy new image to flash, insert boot system command pointing to new image, save config, reboot). Can you be specific about what you did to change the boot variable on the ASA?

I had the 7 image in flash with bootvar set to load 7. I ftp 8 into flash and then changed the boot var to load 8. When I reloaded the image was 7 and the bootvar was pointing to 7. When I deleted 7 the only image in flash was loading, which was the new image 8. I keyed boot system flash:/imagename and reloaded to find the old image taking hold.
