I am setting up a wireless network for the first time and I am a bit confused about how the wireless clients obtain thier ip address. do they obtian thier ip address from the dhcp server on the wlan interface on the controller or is the wlan interface a relay to my dhcp server on the network which means I will have to set up a scope on my dhcp server for the each of the wlan interfaces on the controller.

You can do it either way. You can have the controller relay to another DHCP Server, or use the internal DHCP Server. Simply configure it in the AP-Manager and Management interface.
