I'm new to the Cat 6500 and am putting together my first part list for an upgrade to the Sup 720 (from Sup II). My manager has done this several times and after his initial review of my parts list, asked why I didn't upgrade the SP / RP memory since this is a high capacity switch. I didn't know that was even an option!
So now I am researching what parts I need to add and I think that I have identified what parts to add. I think I need the following:
1 - MEM-S2-512MB (sp upgrade?)
1 - MEM-MSFC2-512MB (rp upgrade?)
Are these the correct parts? I know the Sup 720 has the MSFC3 built-in - is it proper to be adding the part MEM-MSFC2-512MB since it has MSFC2 right in the name?
Thanks,
Jim

If you are purchasing a new Sup720 then
sup720 = 512Mb SP / 512Mb RP - not upgradeable
sup720-3B 512Mb SP / 512Mb RP - upgradeable to 1GB each
sup720-3BXL - 1Gb SP / 1Gb RP
So you have 2 choices
1) Sup720-3B and upgrade
or
2) Sup720-3BXL - no need to upgrade.
In answer to your other question MEM-MSFC2-512MB will work on sup720 MSFC3. See attached link - ordering info at the bottom

I see that there is also a Gig memory expansion (MEM-S3-1GB=, MEM-MSFC3-1GB=). Are these memory upgrades the ones that I should be using? Maybe the 512MB is what comes standard? Help!
