Do I have to configure a vlan to have a layer 3 vlan interface?

I always configure a vlan on 6500 first whenever I need to configure a vlan interface for routing purpose only. Is that necessary? What about I just do:

int vlan 100

ip address x.x.x.x

without first:

vlan

name xxxxx

Thanks

You should always create the vlan at L2 first. If you just create the L3 interface then that will not automatically create the vlan at L2 (at least no on our 6500's) and your L3 interface will remain down.
