trying to understand cpu utilization

how bad is this?

A#sh processes cpu

CPU utilization for five seconds: 93%/36%; one minute: 90%; five minutes: 88

Im trying to uderstand the 90% and what they mean overall

The 90 is the CPU utilization over the last 60 seconds. It looks like your router is using a lot of CPU cycles. Post the results of the following and maybe we can help.

Hi Richard,

one minute: 90% means the average cpu utilization over a 1 minute period.

The same applies to the five minutes:88% - cpu utilization over a 5 minute period.

These values are very high. Your box is working close to its limits.

Users can experience higher latency and more packet drops when this is happening.

You should look into what traffic is causing this.

What's changed in your network? How long has this router been experiencing high CPU util? What interfaces are in use? How are you processing packets?

More of a concern is your high software process rate, which appears to be in IP input.

thx!...I just happend to issue the sho process cpu command and noticed the utilization..

I was playing with PRTG and was wondering

if it was causing a heavy load on the cpu and
