show interface output question

Hello

The following metrics are displayed under each interface.

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit, DLY 100 usec,reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

1. what is the significance of these values on switchports and vlan interface (except MTU, BW)?

2. Is it configurable and how we interpret the statistics for each link ?

Hi Padmanabhan,

DLY means packet DeLaY on the interface expressed in microseconds.

Reliability means how often the interface went down and was unusable. 1/255 means not reliable, 255/255 means 100% reliable.

Txload and rxload mean how the interface is loaded with traffic, output and input. 1/255 means very light load, 255/255 means very heavy load on a specific interval.

MTU, Bandwidth and Delay are configurable on interface level. Reliablility and load are calculated values.

You can set the interval of load calculation on an interface using the "load-interval" command.

Significance:

Examples:

- EIGRP by default uses these BW and DLY values in metric calculations.

- OSPF uses BW in its metric calculations.

- You can set the MTU size on an interface to accomodate larger than 1500 bytes packets, when using tunneling, MPLS, etc.
