How do you set the Gi port speed and duplex on a 3550. I'm taking it the default for the Gi port is full being Gi but I cant set the speed unless I set it on the other device connecting to the port.

You should let the port negotiate the Gigabit speed. Setting the speed to a Gig on the connected device, will produce a speed/duplex mismatch. Not an optimal configuration.

If you have an end device which is Gigabit capable while connected to a Gigabit port in the 3550, it will autonegotiate to 1Gb/FD.

Additionally, gigabitEthernet spec always calls for auto-negotiation. Many gigabit implementations will fail (Sun gear being a usual culprit) when you try to set to 1000/full. Keep it to auto and things will work out to the best of their ability.
