Solved: POE to 7914

Hi all. Im trying to hook up a 7914 to a 7960 phone powered via POE. At this point, I dont have a separate power supply for the 7914. Is there a way to power it via POE, like the phone?

Hey Guys,

I have always had to use the Power Cube even for 1 - 7914 if the 7900 series phone was using PoE.Here is the breakdown I have always used;

Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Modules 7914

Cisco 7960 Power Source

Items to Order

1 7914 with 7960 with In-line PoE (you need to order the following)

One, Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Module 7914

One, single footstand

One, power cube

One, country cord

1 7914 with 7960 with Local power (cube)* (you need to order the following)

One, Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Module 7914

One, single footstand

2 7914's with 7960 with In-line or local power** (you need to order the following)

Two, Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Module 7914 ExpansionModule

One, double footstand

One, power cube

One, country cord

* A single Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Module 7914 can receive power from a locally-powered (power cube) Cisco Unified IP Phone.

** Local power must be connected to the first Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Module 7914. This supplies power to both Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Modules 7914s.

Hi, you should be able to PoE the first sidecar, but not the second. Then your luck can vary depending by the switch, does it work ?

Well, Rob is correct in my situation. POE does power the phone, but not the sidecar. Just read the following, but I did see something in a cisco document that gave me the impression that POE would do it, although I cant find it now. Thanks all:

Procedure

Step 1 Depending on how your Cisco IP Phone 7960 is powered, perform one of the

following actions:

â€¢ If your Cisco IP Phone 7960 is powered over the Ethernet and:

- you have one expansion module, then connect the power supply unit to

the AC adaptor port on the expansion module and plug the other end into

a standard electrical power outlet in the wall.

or

- you have two expansion modules, then connect the power supply unit to

the AC adaptor port on the expansion module closest to the IP Phone and

plug the other end into a standard electrical power outlet in the wall.

â€¢ If your Cisco IP Phone 7960 is powered with a power supply unit and:

- you have one expansion module, then reconnect the original IP Phone

power supply unit to the AC adaptor port on the IP Phone and plug the

other end into a standard electrical power outlet in the wall.

or

- you have two expansion modules, then connect a second power supply

unit to the AC adaptor port on the expansion module closest to the

IP Phone and plug the other end into a standard electrical power outlet in

the wall.

Hey, I do have to say that there was some documentation that led me to believe that as well. Again, not sure which document I saw it in, but it did sound that way. Anyway, thanks you guys for helping.

John, first off you are most welcome! Paolo, I thought that the 1st module could be powered via the phone PoE as well, and have read that in docs here before. This doc is the only accurate one that I have found for this :)

in many of my installation i never needed power cube for one 7914.

not really, only 3560 POE.
