Can someone explain what exactly the "\" is doing in this example?

rule 1 /^$758$444$5...$$/ /\1\2/

thus when you dial 7584445111 it becomes 7585111. I see how the end shows the different sets and that it should become 7585111. why does the "\" need to change the meaning of the "(" ?

it works as an escape character to indicate to take it as a separator and not as a digit or something to match
