Hi There;
Is there a way I can configure the 2811 router so that if a serial interface was to go down it will then shut down its own E1 interface?

Nope, but I do have a doc URL for you:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios124/124newft/124t/124t2/ht_eem.htm
To revise my earlier post, you'll need EEM 2.2 - IOS 12.4(2)T - to use the "track" feature. Hopefully you bought SMARTnet with it so you can download the release you need.

I just did this for someone else. See
I outlined examples that will work with 12.4T (using Enhanced Object Tracking) and code prior to 12.4T using syslog.

Sure can. Create a track object to track the state of the interface that you want to watch. Then create an eem applet to no/shut that interface based on state.

Hi there;
IS there then a way of making the E1 interface unshut if the serial interface was to come back up - or would that require manual intervention?
thanks

Yup, just configure the eem applet to track "up" and exec the "down" command set in reverse.

Hi There;
Does that require a specific IOS version to run?
Thanks

It was introduced a while ago and is available in >=IP BASE. As long as you have at least 12.3(14)T you should be fine. What version are you on?

We're about to purchase the router - so I'll need to check that. Do you have an example script I could review?
thanks
