Make an L3 VLAN to a L2 vlan

switch is CatIOS 12.2x

I have a vlan on a 6509 that someone made a Vlan layer3 that should be layer 2. What is the most simple method to fix this.

1) no interface vlan xx

That deletes the L3 interface

2) go into the L3 inteface and give it a "no ip address".

I don't want the interface to "drop" about 100 servers on this vlan.

my predecessor method to create a Layer 2 vlan was to create L3 vlan interfaces but give them no ip address.

Me I just create the L2 vlan in confg-lan mode and don't do a config t/interface vlan xxx

Any advantages over either method?

I naturally think mine is better. Less work, less confusion as to what is L2 and L3 on the switch at a quick glance

Hi Doug,

Of course, your way is OK.

For a vlan to operate as a layer 2 broadcast domain, there is no need to have a vlan interface.

Vlan interfaces are needed when you want to route your traffic out of that vlan.
