Hi,

One of its use is for Security, i.e. eToken http://www.aladdin.com/etoken/demos/cisco/isr.aspx

Another use is for storage. You can copy your config or IOS to USB. i.e. change the "flash:" to "usbflash:". I think only IOS 12.4 can read and write to USB.

You can't boot a router from USB.

Regards,

Dandy

Hi,

You *can* boot at least 2800 series from USB, but you need a recent boot ROM version. Real world example is available, if you google for "cisco 2800 usb boot". Thanks to Ivan Pepelnjak.

That's no hidden feature, it's an official one:

"As for Compact Flash, it is possible to boot any Cisco IOS image from USB Flash."

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps6247/product_data_sheet0900aecd80232473.html

Addendum:

I've been able to boot 2811 from brand X USB sticks, there are size and formatting requirements, though.

PS:

Current ROM is needed on 2800 series; can be upgraded via flash process if not current.

Thanks Joseph, 5 pts.

Previous ROM doesn't support booting from USB, I'm still living in the past :)

Thanks,

Dandy

Hi Dandy,

Could you let me know is ther any problem of usb ports not working with firmware 12.415t3?c870-advipservicesk9-Mz-124.15.t3.bin

Hi,

Can You provide the steps to copy the ios into pen drive. And if possible pls send the steps to copy the ios trough Ftp.

Thanks & Regards,

Sham.

If the router recognized the USB device, and a dir command shows disk space, you copy files to it, or from it, as you would like other memory devices. You do need the correct device name. (I don't recall how it's listed. "USB0:"? "dir all"? command should show it.)

e.g. (prompted - again not certain of device ID)

copy flash: usb0:

or

copy ftp: usb0:
