Lightweight AP during upgrade

I tried looking online for this answer but no luck. During the upgrade of a controller, do the lightweight AP's start searching for other controllers to attach to? With or without the primary controller set. And if they do find another controller, will the AP attach to that controller?

Yes, when the controller is rebooting after upgrading with the new code, the APs disconnect, and perform LWAPP discovery (even when there's no Primary/Secondary/Tertiary configured) to find another controller. If one is found using normal LWAPP discovery mechanisms, they'll join. If AP Fallback was enabled, they'll go back to the original controller once it's up.
