Hi all, can anyone tell me if this is right ?

What is the directed broadcast address for an IP network 196.233.24.15 with default subnet mask?

the answer says 196.233.24.14 is a class c address, how is this ? I thought that 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.254 are class c addresses ?

Within the classful addressing structure, 192.168.x.x are private addresses, they're not all the class "C" addresses. This Wiki article should help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classful_network

Hi,

192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 is PRIVATE class C address space (according to RFC 1918), but 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.255 is the whole class C address space.

BR,

Mohammed Mahmoud.

has anyone got the list for all classes ?

If you check the link Joseph posted above, there's a table showing the ranges towards the bottom of the page.

Hi Carl,

Class A - 1-126

Class B - 128-191

Class C - 192-223

Class D - Multicast - 224-239

Class E - Experimental - 240 - 255

HTH,

Hello there

In classful addressing, the following are different classes and their address range:

Class A: 0.0.0.0 - 127.255.255.255

Class B: 128.0.0.0 - 191.255.255.255

Class C: 192.0.0.0 - 223.255.255.255

Class D: 224.0.0.0 - 239.255.255.255 (used for multicasting)

Class E: 240.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.255 (used for scietific purposes)

The following address ranges are known as private address in their respective classes:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255

172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255

192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

(Private IP addresses are used by ISP's, enterprises for their internal network. They cannot be routed in public network. They have to be converted to a public IP address (addresses other than the private addresses) using NAT to access networks outside their private networks.)

The directed broadcast address for network 196.233.24.15 with default subnet mask i.e. 255.255.255.0 for class C is 196.233.24.255.

HTH

Pankaj
