Hi,

You would use a GRE tunnel in case you want to encapsulate other protocols in the communication between sites. It basically creates you a virtual point to point link, hiding the details for the network between both points.

I have used before for customers who only need to know about the "hub". After implementing GRE, I always configure IPSEC over the tunnel for encryption.

Hope it helps,

Paulo

Another useful function on the GRE protocol is allowing multicasts and routing protocols to cross the link.

So GRE is used along with Ipsec i.e GRE over IPSec.

As Ipsec dont support multicast and broadcast GRE is implemented over IPSec.

so the IP datagram is encapsulated First by the Carrier Protocol -GRE header then Ipsec encapsulation is done for Security.
