why is this no enabled by default on cisco switches?

I have this problem too.

Because PortFast is not a default! :-)

Great question, I would guess that is adds a bit of overhead as the port has to watch for BPDUs received now...

The default mode for ports on a switch ie either Dynamic desirable or Dynamic auto (depending on switch model).

This implies the basic mode is to trunk, if BPDU gaurd was enabled by default switch to switch connections would need to have BPDU gaurd disabled.

Also BPDU gaurd is not the only feature, BPDU filter for example prevents spanning tree loops but unlike gaurd it does not shutdown the port.
