SmartPort is a set of CLI commands. When you apply a smartport on a port, it will apply those set of CLIs on the port. You can use “show parser macro” CLI to see what CLIs are bundled with a smartport(set of CLIs may vary based on the switch type and IOS version).

Cisco also defined some default smartports for Catalyst switches(desktop, phone, switch, router, etc). And Cisco recommends to apply proper smartport to a port based on the device connected to it.

Example: If a phone is connected to port, Cisco recommends applying “phone” smartport on the port.

When you launch Cisco Network Assistant(CNA), it will check if proper smartports are applied on the connected ports. If not, it will recommend through a notification to apply proper smartports. If you accept the recommendation, you can continue and configure the smartports that CNA suggests or you can ignore the suggestion.

When you apply smartports, CNA will validate if the smartport being applied is a proper one for the connected device(Ex: It will not allow to apply “switch” smartport to a port that is connected to a phone).
