EWDM Distances

Hi All,

I'm trying to get an idea of maximum distances of EWDM 10Gig fibre transceivers.

The only documents I can find on cisco.com are:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/prod/collateral/modules/ps5455/ps6576/product_data_sheet0900aecd801f9333.html which refers a lot to dB and stuff.

I'm don't know much about dB or how the dB measurement is even used.

I'm hoping that the following sentence out of this web page (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5455/product_data_sheet0900aecd806a1c36.html) can be explained to me in terms of kilometers or miles...

" If the overall loss experienced by the 10 Gigabit Ethernet wavelengths can be accommodated within the power budget of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet DWDM transceiver (for example, a DWDM Xenpak has 20 dB of power budget after ~80 km, taking into account dispersion penalties)... "

I am trying to see if I need to purchase an amplifier for the EWDM kit we have. The carrier has asked that I confirm the max distance I can get out of the kit (with and without the amplifier would be good) and I can't seem to find that anywhere?!!

I'm trying to push 10Gbps down a 99km fibre run with this equipment.

Many thanks,

Brad

greetings bmcginn,

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5455/product_data_sheet0900aecd806a1c36.html

clearly specifies at bottom of image7, the chromatic dispersion for 10Gig links over DWDM is 80kms so if you want to push over that distance i bet my money to put another optical amplifier @70Kms for example with an OAD of 2 channels.

"In unamplified point-to-point links, 1-Gigabit DWDM traffic can typically achieve distances around 80km, and 10-Gigabit DWDM traffic can typically reach 60km. In amplified point-to-point links, 1-Gigabit DWDM traffic can typically achieve distances between 100 and 120km, and 10-Gigabit DWDM traffic can typically reach 80km (limited by chromatic dispersion)."

That's my bet.

I forgot add:

Does anyone know what the max distance for a 10Gbps DWDM Xenpak transceiver is through an EWDM Mux-8?

Also, Does anyone know what the max distance for a 10Gbps DWDM Xenpak transceiver is through an EWDM Mux-8 when using an amplifier?

thanks,

Brad
