trunk port question

If i configure a vlan on a switch , say vlan 100 and only configure trunk ports to carry that vlan traffic - there is no access port on vlan 100. Is it going to work or do I need to ocnfigure atleast one port in vlan 100 in access mode? This is on a 6500 running catOS.

The trunk port will automatically carry all Vlans unless you manually filter it. Therefore, you don't need to have a port in access mode assigned to Vlan 100.

Fawad, ya habibi! :-)

It depends what you want to achieve.

If you are trying to enable a vlan on a switch for devices to access the network as part of that vlan, then you have to configure an access port, place it in the vlan you want, and then plug in the device -- like, say, a computer.

If your objective is to carry the traffic for vlan 10 from one switch to another, then a trunk will suffice.

The trunk will automatically carry all vlan traffic unless you filter certain ones out.

Remember, though, that you will have to enable the vlan on the switch with the trunk ports, even though you dont have to configure access ports for that vlan.
