6500 as a dns server ?

Hello, I can't find the feature, so I want to know if the 6500 (IOS based)could be a DNS server ?.

Can somebody provide me some information about ?

Hi,

Get a workstation and install Linux and BIND. For DNS you just need more Memory, CPU is not that important. You can get a P4 with 1GB DRAM, install RH EL 5 and BIND 9.x

If you want appliance type, get InfoBlox. Its a DNS/NTP/DHCP/IPAM/RADIUS/TFTP...

Hello Dandy, thanks for the answer. The customer want to implement the DNS in the core switch, he want to define differents groups (or zones), he will have 1000 to define. I heard along time ago, that the 6500 have the DNS server feature, but now, I was looking for this function, and I can't find it.

What does he mean, he wants to define groups/zones? DNS domains?

If you go with a white box solution, OpenBSD is better. Comes with a hardened version of BIND out of the box.

I too, would recommend using a Linux solution

as well, you will have more options, flexibility and avoid having dns queries eat away at the routers' cpu & memory that would be better used for other network functions
