example of multicasts?

I'm looking for examples of multicasts to be illustrated by watching packet traffic through a sniffer. If someone has a simple idea for what scenario would show such packets, I would appreciate hearing them.

Thanks!

Some local multicast packets or frames might be visible on many Ethernet segments from network administrative support features. I have in mind such as various hello packets.

Keep in mind you want to sniff a link that sees all the multicast traffic, and if using a PC sniffer, a NIC and stack that does likewise.

Turn on RIP v2 and watch for multicasts to 224.0.0.5.

Other protocols use multicasts as well.

iTunes or other music service will generate some multicast traffic.

Those are probably the easiest to get and use.

Good Luck

Hi Scott, please correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't RIP v2 use multicast address - 224.0.0.9?

Ta,

Garry

And 224.0.0.5 is for OSPF.

So much for a quick, off-the-top-of-my-head response. ;-}

I waffled and chose five ...

Thanks for the correction!

Scott, not everything can be answered by throwing a dice ;-)

Ah, that's the problem ... there was no 9 on the dice. ;-) sorry Scott, couldn't resist.

I rolled the D20 and got the hit, so I rolled a D10 for the answer ...

"It sucks to get old;" brain farts abound!

Thanks for the support guys ...
