but advantage doesn't recognize the association with ip communicator

Right so in call manager 4.1 you have added a ip communicator phone. You have then installed ip communicator on your laptop along with VTA. But VTA doesnt not make a connection to IP communicator?

First of all have you enabled video support on the ip communicator? You should see a small video camera icon on the ip communicator.
